World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1 each year around the world. It has become one of the most recognised international health days and a key opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services. 

ANKORS and the Nelson United Church are hosting – World AIDS Day on Wednesday, December 1st/2010.  At the Nelson United Church – 602 Silica St. (corner of Josephine and Silica).

The service will be held 7 – 9pm with Reverend Christine Dudley.

A candle light vigil will be held in support and memory of those that have passed.

The evening will include live music featuring Duncan Johnston, Marina Richards, and Amberstaar Pyper.

Food and beverages will be provided,

Music, Thoughts, and Memories will be Shared.

If you missed the last First Aid training we hosted you are in luck!

ANKORS will be hosting – A First Aid Course – Workplace Emergency First Aid (WEFA) with instructor Terry O’Gorman.

This certification is the equivalent of Level 1 First Aid.

Time and Place: December 3rd/2010 – 8:30am to 5pm at ANKORS (101 Baker St).

The cost of the course is $95.00 person which includes a work book.

Four Way Tie!

The night of Saturday August 14th was an incredible night filled with music, comedy, silent auction action, and commenced with the naming of our “2010 AIDS Walk For Life” winning theme song.  Titled “I Don’t Dance Alone”, the winning song was passionately written and performed by the one and only Amberstaar Pyper.  All of the theme song entries were solid tunes written by a talented group of singer songwriters.  Beautiful melodies each and everyone, drawing inspiration from a variety of styles.  We had artists representing blues, folk, rocknroll, hiphop, electropop, jazzy, funk, and Baltic Roma brass.  Our celebrity judges (Nicola Harwood director of The Oxygen Art Centre, Paul Hinrichs of Kootenay Co-op Radio, and Stacey Lock the most famous Community Outreach Worker) bravely took on the challenging of objectively scoring the talent on display.  Leanne & Rohan (the alter ego’s of Lisel Forst and Robyn Lamb) provided the comedy relief with their hiphop folk anthem “Walk For Life”.  Lucas Myers brought his infamous ukulele and with his wife Krista Lynch on keyboards, performed as The Harried Parents with a song titled “Love”, featuring an extensive electronic drum solo.

 There were sing-a-long songs (Meg Stewart’s “Rainbows All Around Us”), songs that brought tears to our eyes, songs that rocked out (The Black Albino’s), and songs that taught us something.  Amberstaar’s winning song “I Don’t Dance Alone”,  took the night and the contest with the most heart felt and powerful performance from lyric to melody.

 Amazingly, at the end of the night we actually had a four way tie which we gave up to the audience to decide the winner through applause.  Ben Nixon (Mossy Rock Producitions), our fabulous sound tech, measured the sounds levels generated and our winner was decided.  Our two runners up were Aradia with her song “I’m Sorry”, and Mara Sand with Frank Brook for their song “Celebrating Support”.  Rob Mercy finished just out of the winning with his song “I’m On Your Side”, featuring, not only his talent as a songwriter and guitar player, but also a display of his beat boxing prowess.

 With the support of our sponsors Oso Negro Coffee, The Nelson Brewing Company, Eddie Music, Big Cranium Design, The Hume Hotel, plus all the business’s that donated items to our silent auction, and our audience of just under a 100 people, brought our fundraising total to $2700!  Thank-you Nelson for your incredible support.

Watch as the Kootenay’s emerging singer-songwriters strut their stuff alongside known local talents Lucas Myers and Krista Lynch, Lisel Forst and Robyn Lamb, Brahm Taylor, and the Black Albinos!

Vote to choose your favourite theme song for the AIDS Walk for Life – be there for the music, the pain, and the GLORY as this epic faceoff between artists comes to a head on Saturday, August 14th at Self Design High.
